The astrolabe is an instrument used for measuring the positions of heavenly bodies. It consists of a circle or section of a circle, marked off in degrees, with a movable arm pivoted at the center of the circle. When the zero point on the circle has been oriented with the horizon, the altitude or azimuth of any celestial object can be measured by sighting along the arm.
It was a means of navigation in pre-modern times. It became highly developed in the Islamic regions of the world by 800 c.e., and was introduced to Europe from Islamic Spain (Andalusia) in the early 12th century c.e.. It was the most popular astronomical instrument until around the mid 17th century, when it was supplanted by more accurate and specialized instruments. It thus serves as a symbol of guidance in a sea of uncertainty. |
