Free Consultation: Is It Worth It?
Bear in mind that like all reputable, conscientious lawyers, we offer free consultations for those who have a demonstrated inability to pay. However, when receiving "free" consultation from a lawyer or immigration consultant consider: Is this advice useful to you, or just a sales pitch geared toward a captive audience member (namely, you)? Remember, during a free consultation, a counselor's information gathering is spent in part on determining how you will become his next client. The time spent during a free consultation: is it hurried, containing hard to follow statements and/or specialized jargon? Due to time pressures, and the need to serve clients who have already retained him, a counselor offering free consultations wants you to 'cut to the chase', or 'get to the point'. This may cause you to leave out important details about your situation, and the advice given may not be proper for you. Additionally, the uses of specialized short forms are used to impress you, but leave you with no advice that is directly applicable to your situation. Is there more than one outcome presented at the free consultation, or rather, a bold assertion that there are no other results that will occur? The pressures during free consultation can often lead to you being counseled that 'there is only one alternative', when there in fact may be other ways to solve your problem. Similarly, overconfidence may be expressed about the chances of success of a procedure that is highly discretionary. If you follow the free advice given and a problem arises, what can you do? You may have no one to blame in this situation. From your point of view, there is nothing worse than being misled or more confused after a consultation. |
